In Britain any elevations over 610 m (2000 ft) are classified as mountains - these are known as 'Nuttalls' in England and Wales (John & Anne Nuttall, 1989-1990). Of the 446 Nuttalls, 190 are in Wales and 36 of these are located in the Brecon Beacons National Park (renamed to Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in April 2023) - the park covers a total area of 1344 sq km (519 sq miles).
The National Park is subdivided into the Black Mountains (12 peaks) in the east, which borders with England; the central area has the Brecon Beacons range (10 peaks) and Fforest Fawr (7 peaks); and in the west the Mynydd Du range (7 peaks).
Over the years I have been able to summit the 8 highest peaks during various visits - and I have now decided I want to bag them all!!!
The peaks I have summited so far are:- Pen Y Fan (886 m), Brecon Beacons
- Corn Du (873 m), Brecon Beacons
- Craig Gwaun Taf (826 m), Brecon Beacons
- Waun Fach (811 m), Black Mountains
- Pen Brycheiniog (802 m), Mynydd Du
- Twr Y Fan Foel (802 m), Mynydd Du
- Pen Y Gadair Fawr (800 m), Black Mountains
- Cribyn (795 m), Brecon Beacons
